A new Ebola diagnostic test that can identify in minutes whether a person has Ebola has proven to be faster and just as sensitive as diagnostics performed in a lab, according to new data published in the journal The Lancet .
Currently, to confirm someone has Ebola, a vial of blood must be sent to a specialized laboratory where it is tested. The new rapid diagnostic test (RDT), called Corgenix ReEBOV Antigen Rapid Test kit, can be done right at the bedside with just a drop of blood. A rapid test puts fewer people at risk of infection, significantly cuts down on waiting time and helps health care workers determine who has the disease so they can be quickly isolated.
In a study of 106 suspected Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, researchers tested the patients with both the new tool and the standard laboratory procedure. They found that both tests detected all of the confirmed cases of Ebola, and the RDT was faster.
“Although the RDT requires refrigeration, this is already available in many health centers in endemic areas, particularly those that store vaccines and other medical products,” said study co-author Dr. Jana Broadhurst from Partners In Health in a statement.
The current Ebola outbreak infected 27,443 people in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia, killing 11,207. Though the outbreak appears to be waning, having a better diagnostic tool is still desirable—and having a tool at the ready, should another outbreak arise in the future, could be critical to quicker diagnosis.

Sierra Leone has recorded two new cases of Ebola in Freetown in the past few days, disproving the assumption that the capital city had already defeated the deadly virus.
Health officials said the first case in Freetown since May 29 was a fisherman who caught the hemorrhagic fever from his girlfriend in the northern district of Port Loko.
Shortly afterwards, a family member who lived in the same household also caught the virus.
Health Ministry data shows that the other six recorded cases in Sierra Leone over the past week were in the northern provinces of Port Loko and Kambia.
The worst known Ebola epidemic in history has killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa, about a third of them in Sierra Leone.

Ebola: Health worker tests positive for Epidemic disease in Italy

According to the previous research work we did on Ebola and its status in other countries. I guess we saw that a new case was found in Italy, on the 12th of may 2015?.

Now this is the news that: A healthcare worker in Italy has been
diagnosed with Ebola, the first time a person has received an Ebola diagnosis in the country. The patient is currently undergoing treatment for the disease.
The worker was volunteering in an Ebola treatment center in Sierra Leone, and on May 7, the volunteer flew from Freetown, Sierra Leone to Rome, stopping in Casablanca,
Morocco. The patient had no symptoms at that time. It wasn’t until May 10, when the patient was already in Italy, that they began to
experience symptoms of the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the patient isolated themselves in their home
before they were transported on the May 11 to the Hospital of Sassari, Sardinia. On May 12th, samples from the patient confirmed that they did indeed have Ebola.
The patient was then transferred from the Hospital of Sassari to he National Institute for Infectious Diseases (INMI) Lazzaro
Spallanzani of Rome in a special aircraft.
Since the patient did not start experiencing symptoms until 72 hours after returning to Italy, WHO says it is not necessary to conduct
contact tracing of individuals who were on the same plane. Ebola can only be transmitted via the bodily fluids of a symptomatic person.
More than 26,720 cases of Ebola have been reported in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea since the start of the outbreak, and more than 11,000 people have died.

Ebola Virus: Liberian get infected after having sex with an Ebola survivor, surpassing the previous limit of the virus survival

Hmm. We all know the Popular deadly virus, Ebola. News reaching me is that the deadly virus has entered liberia again.
Ebola ravaged much of West Africa last year and has claimed over 10,000 lives in 15months.
A woman in Liberia is feared to have Ebola after having unprotected sex with a survivor of the deadly disease, more than six months after he was cured.
The 44-year-old woman from Monrovia, tested positively for Ebola on March 20, 14 days after having unprotected sex with a 46-year-
old, who had previously tested negative for the lethal virus.
According to a report from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the man was initially infected with Ebola on September 9,
2014. He was released from the treatment centre October 7 after his symptoms cleared up and several tests showed no sign of the virus in his bloodstream.
However, it is thought that traces of the virus survived in his semen, meaning he could have infected the woman after having unprotected
sex with her on March 7 this year.
The woman, who is currently the only
confirmed case in the region, first began showing signs of the virus seven days later, was admitted to hospital on March 17, sent to an isolation two days later, and was officially diagnosed on March 20.
If the transmission is confirmed it will mean that the virus survived in his semen for 199 days.
The previous limit for the virus surviving was thought to be 82 days.
The case suggests patients who are deemed cured of the virus, in fact stay infectious for more than twice as long as previously thought.
The worrying finding raises fears that
eradicating the virus could be much more difficult than previously thought.
While medics say they cannot confirm that the disease was passed on through sex, they have advised all survivors to use condoms every time they have intercourse.
Given the latest evidence in the Liberian survivor's case, the CDC joined the WHO and Liberia in issuing the guidelines on safe sex.
According to the World Health Organization, 26,298 people have been infected with Ebola in the West African outbreak, and 10,892 have
died, mostly in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Liberia has had no new Ebola cases in five weeks. That country's last confirmed case died on March 27. The WHO declares countries to be Ebola-free 42 days after the last known case. If there are no additional cases, Liberia could be declared Ebola-free May 9.
The deadly virus is contracted by contact with infected bodily fluids and its symptoms include fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach
and chest pain.
