How breastfeeding a child boost the child IQ and improve their sense of reasoning - Research

Breastmilk is of course very important it helps our brain in diverse way. Read this researched piece...Researchers tracked down nearly 3,500 Brazilian adults who were enrolled in a study within days of their birth in 1982. Back in the '80s, interviewers had asked their mothers how long their children were breast-fed and how old they were when they were introduced to other foods.
At the time, breast-feeding wasn’t associated with any particular socioeconomic class in Brazil, the study authors said. That was true of the families in this study – 21% of the children nursed for less than one month and 17% nursed for more than a year. (Among the rest, 26% were breast-fed for one to three months, 23% for three to six months, and 14% for six to 12 months.)
Fast-forward to 2012. Those children are now 30-year-olds with jobs.
So the researchers, from the Federal University of Pelotas and the Catholic University of Pelotas, asked them how much income they earned in the previous month. They also administered an intelligence test to see if they could find a link between breast-feeding and adult IQ. (Many studies have found a correlation between breast-feeding and IQ in children.)
The average IQ of the adults was 98, and they completed an average of 11.4 years of school.
The average monthly income of the 3,493 study participants was 1,000 Brazilian reals (about $311).
After adjusting for factors like parental education, family income at birth, genetic ancestry and mothers’ smoking and weight status, the researchers found a basically linear relationship between breast-feeding and monthly income – children who nursed for more than six months went on to earn significantly more than children who didn’t.
Compared to those who stopped breast-feeding by the time they were 1 month old, those who nursed for more than a year earned 28% more per month, according to the study.
The benefits were even greater for people who had nursed for six months to one year
– their monthly incomes were 39% higher than those in the baseline group who breast-fed for less than a month.
IQ followed a similar pattern. After adjusting for demographic factors, the researchers calculated that study participants who nursed for six to 12 months had 3.5 more IQ points than those who nursed for less than a month.
People who were breastfed for more than a year gained 3.76 IQ points.
These higher IQs were the primary mechanism through which breast-feeding seemed to lead to higher incomes, accounting for 72% of the observed effect, the study authors found.
Although they didn’t examine the biology of breast-feeding, the researchers noted that unlike infant formula, breast milk contains long-chain saturated fatty acids like DHA, which “are essential for brain development,” they wrote.
Previous studies have found that higher IQs lead to bigger paychecks, but this report is the first to show a “direct association” between breast-feeding and income, mediated by IQ, according to the study.
“The beneficial effects of breast-feeding on intelligence persist into adulthood,” the researchers concluded.
The results were published this week in the journal Lancet Global Health.

Detailed: Dementia Overview, its causes and symptoms.

Dementia, the brain disease giant is a collective term used to describe the problems that people with various underlying brain disorders or damage can have with their memory, language and thinking. Alzheimer's disease is the best known and most common disorder under the umbrella of dementia.
What is dementia?
Dementia is not a single disease in itself, but a general term to describe symptoms such as impairments to memory, communication and thinking.
While the likelihood of having dementia increases with age, it is not a normal part of aging. Before we had today's understanding of specific disorders, "going senile" used to be a common phrase for dementia ("senility"), which misunderstood it as a standard part of getting old.
Light cognitive impairments, by contrast, such as poorer short-term memory, can happen as a normal part of aging (we slowly start to lose brain cells as we age beyond our 20s. This is known as age-related cognitive decline, not dementia, because it does not cause the person or the people around them any problems.
Dementia describes two or more types of symptom that are severe enough to affect daily activities.
But as well as progressive brain cell death like that seen in Alzheimer's disease, dementia can be caused by a head injury, a stroke or a brain tumor, among other causes.
Some of the causes are simpler to understandin terms of how they affect the brain and lead to dementia:
- Vascular dementia: this results from brain cell death caused by conditions such as cerebrovascular disease, for example stroke.
This prevents normal blood flow, depriving brain cells of oxygen.
- Injury: post-traumatic dementia is directly related to brain cell death caused by injury.
- Some types of traumatic brain injury: particularly if repetitive, such as received bysports players - have been linked to certaindementias appearing later in life. Evidence is weak, however, that a single brain injury willraise the likelihood of having a degenerativedementia such as Alzheimer's disease.
Dementia can also be caused by:
- Prion diseases: from certain types ofprotein, as in CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakobdisease) and GSS(Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome).
- HIV infection: when the problem is simplytermed HIV-associated dementia. How thevirus damages brain cells is not certain.
- Reversible factors: some dementias can betreated by reversing the effects ofunderlying causes, including medicationinteractions, depression, vitamindeficiencies (for example, thiamine/B1,leading to Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome,which is most often caused by alcoholmisuse), and thyroid abnormalities.
Symptoms
The symptoms of dementia experienced bypatients, or noticed by people close to them,are exactly the same signs that healthcareprofessionals look for. Therefore, detailedinformation on these is given in the nextsection about tests and diagnosis.
A person with dementia may show any of thefollowing problems, mostly due to memoryloss - some of which they may notice (orbecome frustrated with) themselves, whileothers may only be picked up by carers orhealthcare workers as a cause for concern.
The signs used to compile this list arepublished by the American Academy of FamilyPhysicians (AAFP) in the journal AmericanFamily Physician
- Recent memory loss: a sign of this mightbe asking the same question repeatedly,forgetting about already asking it.
- Difficulty completing familiar tasks: forexample, making a drink or cooking a meal,but forgetting and leaving it.
- Problems communicating: difficulty withlanguage by forgetting simple words orusing the wrong ones.
- Disorientation: with time and place, gettinglost on a previously familiar street close tohome, for example, and forgetting how theygot there or would get home again.
- Poor judgment: the AAFP says: "Even awell person might get distracted and forgetto watch a child for a little while. Peoplewith dementia, however, might forget allabout the child and just leave the house forthe day."
- Problems with abstract thinking: forexample, dealing with money.
- Misplacing things: including putting themin the wrong places and forgetting aboutdoing this.
- Mood changes: unlike those we all have,swinging quickly through a set of moods.
- Personality changes: becoming irritable,suspicious or fearful, for example.
- Loss of initiative: showing less interest instarting something or going somewhere.

Essential: Foods that makes our brain alert(That boosts our brain)

According to a research done by me before posting this. The brain does 80% of what we do, what our hands do, what our teeth do. Everything!. Loving someone?, hating someone?, working?. The brain does it. I watched a program today(that inspired to create this blog), Dr flyer said something about how to retrain our brain. He talked so much about our brain. Would write 4 articles soon.(Keep checking).
Now, if your brain is slow and less agile, you will have difficulties in doing and remembering things. One of the things that can also help and kill your brain are your diets, the foods you eat. The listed and explained are foods that helps your brain. Get orientated.
- Caffeine
There's no magic bullet to boost IQ or make you smarter -- but certain substances, like caffeine, can energize you and help you concentrate. Found in coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, and some medications, caffeine gives you that unmistakable wake-up buzz, though the effects are short-term. And more is often less: Overdo it on caffeine and it can make you jittery and uncomfortable.
- Sugar
Sugar is your brain's preferred fuel source -- not table sugar, but glucose, which your body processes from the sugars and carbs you eat.
That's why a glass of something sweet to drink can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking, and mental ability.
Have too much, though, and memory can be impaired -- along with the rest of you. Go easy on the sugar so it can enhance memory without packing on the pounds.
- Fish
A protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish -- rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: A diet with higher levels of them has been linked to lower dementia and stroke risks and slower mental decline; plus, they may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older.
For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly.
- Nuts and Chocolate
Nuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which is linked to less cognitive decline as you age. Dark chocolate also has other powerful antioxidant properties, and it contains natural stimulants like caffeine, which can enhance focus.
Enjoy up to an ounce a day of nuts and dark chocolate to get all the benefits you need without excess calories, fat, or sugar.
- Avocados and Whole Grains
Every organ in the body depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. A diet high in whole grains and fruits like avocados can cut the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces your risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood flow, offering a simple, tasty way to fire up brain cells.

Many are like, why does the brain need blood?. I thought it just need oxygen and other nutrients to survive.
Well, the brain needs blood, if there is low transfer of blood to the brain. Hm, you don't want to know the consequences!
Well, To cut the story short...
Why the brain needs blood:
An organism is made up of many billions ofcells. The Brain also contains cells. Cells need nutrients and oxygen to survive which is
supplied by the blood.
In other words, those nutrients the brain needs is supplied via your blood.

What an untreated Hypertension(High BP) can lead to.

We all know High BP right?. If you don't let me remind you on a statement you have probably heard from a friend, colleague or wherever.
Example; You are shouting on top of your voice. Maybe calling someone loudly, then someone silently echoes"better don't give Hypertension" . You remember now. If that doesn't remind you, then I bet we didn't grow up the same way. But I can bet you heard of it.
Well, High blood pressure (hypertension) can quietly damage your body for years before symptoms develop. Left uncontrolled, you may wind up with a disability, a poor quality of life or even a fatal heart attack. Fortunately, with treatment and lifestyle changes, you can control your high blood pressure to reduce your risk of life-threatening complications.
Here's a look at the complications high blood pressure can cause when it's not effectively controlled.
Damage to your arteries
Healthy arteries are flexible, strong and elastic. Their inner lining is smooth so that blood flows freely, supplying vital organs and tissues with adequate nutrients and oxygen. If you have high blood pressure, the increased pressure of blood flowing through your arteries gradually can cause a variety of problems,
including:
Artery damage and narrowing. High blood pressure can damage the cells of your arteries' inner lining. That launches a cascade of events that make artery walls thick and stiff, a disease called arteriosclerosis (ahr-teer-e-o-skluh-ROE- sis), or hardening of the arteries. Fats from
your diet enter your bloodstream, pass through the damaged cells and collect to start atherosclerosis (ath-ur-o-skluh-ROE-sis). These changes can affect arteries throughout your body, blocking blood flow to your heart, kidneys, brain, arms and legs.
The damage can cause many problems, including chest pain (angina), heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, blocked
arteries in your legs or arms (peripheral artery disease), eye damage, and aneurysms.
Aneurysm. Over time, the constant pressure of blood moving through a weakened artery can cause a section of its wall to enlarge and form a bulge (aneurysm). An aneurysm
(AN-yoo-riz-um) can potentially rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding. Aneurysms can form in any artery throughout your body, but they're most common in the aorta, your body's largest
artery.
Damage to your heart
Your heart pumps blood to your entire body.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage your heart in a number of ways, such as:
Coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease affects the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle. Arteries narrowed by coronary artery disease don't
allow blood to flow freely through your arteries. When blood can't flow freely to your heart, you can experience chest pain, a heart attack or irregular heart rhythms
(arrhythmias).
Enlarged left heart. High blood pressure forces your heart to work harder than necessary in order to pump blood to the rest of your body. This causes the left ventricle to thicken or stiffen (left ventricular hypertrophy). These changes
limit the ventricle's ability to pump blood to your body. This condition increases your risk of heart attack, heart failure and sudden cardiac death.
Heart failure. Over time, the strain on your heart caused by high blood pressure can cause your heart muscle to weaken and work less efficiently. Eventually, your
overwhelmed heart simply begins to wear out and fail. Damage from heart attacks adds to this problem.
Damage to your brain
Just like your heart, your brain depends on a nourishing blood supply to work properly and survive. But high blood pressure can cause
several problems, including:
Transient ischemic attack (TIA). Sometimes called a ministroke, a transient ischemic (is-KEE-mik) attack is a brief, temporary disruption of blood supply to your brain.
It's often caused by atherosclerosis or a blood clot — both of which can arise from high blood pressure. A transient ischemic attack is often a warning that you're at risk. of a full-blown stroke.
Stroke. A stroke occurs when part of your brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients, causing brain cells to die. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke by damaging and weakening your brain's blood vessels, causing them to narrow,
rupture or leak. High blood pressure can also cause blood clots to form in the arteries leading to your brain, blocking blood flow and potentially causing a stroke.
Dementia. Dementia is a brain disease resulting in problems with thinking, speaking, reasoning, memory, vision and movement. There are a number of causes of
dementia. One cause, vascular dementia, can result from narrowing and blockage of the arteries that supply blood to the brain.
It can also result from strokes caused by an interruption of blood flow to the brain. In either case, high blood pressure may be the culprit.
Mild cognitive impairment. Mild cognitive impairment is a transition stage between the changes in understanding and memory that come with aging and the more-serious problems caused by Alzheimer's disease.
Like dementia, it can result from blocked blood flow to the brain when high blood pressure damages arteries.
Damage to your kidneys
Your kidneys filter excess fluid and waste from your blood — a process that depends on healthy blood vessels. High blood pressure can injure both the blood vessels in and
leading to your kidneys, causing several types of kidney disease (nephropathy). Having diabetes in addition to high blood pressure
can worsen the damage.
Kidney failure. High blood pressure is one of the most common causes of kidney failure. That's because it can damage both the large arteries leading to your kidneys and the tiny blood vessels (glomeruli) within the kidneys. Damage to either makes
it so your kidneys can't effectively filter waste from your blood. As a result, dangerous levels of fluid and waste can accumulate. You might ultimately require dialysis or kidney transplantation.
Kidney scarring (glomerulosclerosis).
Glomerulosclerosis (gloe-mer-u-loe-skluh- ROE-sis) is a type of kidney damage caused by scarring of the glomeruli (gloe-MER-u- li). The glomeruli are tiny clusters of blood
vessels within your kidneys that filter fluid and waste from your blood.
Glomerulosclerosis can leave your kidneys unable to filter waste effectively, leading to kidney failure.
Kidney artery aneurysm. An aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. When it occurs in an artery leading to the kidney, it's known as a kidney (renal) artery aneurysm. One potential cause is atherosclerosis, which weakens and damages the artery wall. Over time, high blood pressure in a weakened artery can cause a section to enlarge and form a bulge — the aneurysm. Aneurysms can rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding.

Enough of story...
Here is the definition:
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia. A general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life.
Alzheimer's disease accounts for 50 to 80 percent of dementia cases.

Basic reasons why you should take Chocolates often.

I once read on Chocolates, according to the stuff I read, Chocolates pretty help our skin, heart and brain function. Read orientation below...
1. Dark Chocolate is Very Nutritious
If you buy quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, then it is actually quite nutritious.
It contains a decent amount of soluble fiber and is loaded with minerals.
A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with
70-85% cocoa contains ( 1 ):
11 grams of fiber.
67% of the RDA for Iron.
58% of the RDA for Magnesium.
89% of the RDA for Copper.
98% of the RDA for Manganese.
It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium.
Of course, 100 grams (3.5 ounces) is a fairly, large amount and not something you should be consuming daily. All these nutrients also come with 600 calories and moderate amounts of sugar .
For this reason, dark chocolate is best consumed in moderation.
The fatty acid profile of cocoa and dark chocolate is excellent. The fats are mostly saturated and monounsaturated, with small amounts of polyunsaturates.
It also contains stimulants like caffeine and theobromine, but is unlikely to keep you awake at night as the amount of caffeine is very
small compared to coffee .
Bottom Line: Quality dark chocolate is rich in Fiber, Iron, Magnesium, Copper, Manganese and a few other minerals.
2. Dark Chocolate is a Powerful Source of Antioxidants
Have you ever heard of a measure called ORAC?
ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is a measure of the antioxidant activity of foods.
Basically, researchers pit a bunch of free radicals (bad) against a sample of food and see how well the antioxidants in the food can “disarm” them.
The biological relevance of this metric is questioned, because it’s done in a test tube and may not have the same effect in the body.
However, I think it is worth mentioning that raw, unprocessed cocoa beans are among the highest scoring foods that have been tested.
Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are biologically active and function as antioxidants. These include
polyphenols, flavanols, catechins, among others.
One study showed that cocoa and dark chocolate contained more antioxidant activity, polyphenols and flavanols than other fruits they tested, which included blueberries and Acai berries.
Bottom Line: Cocoa and dark chocolate have a wide variety of powerful antioxidants, way more than most other foods.
3. Dark Chocolate May Improve Blood Flow and Lower Blood Pressure
The flavanols in dark chocolate can stimulate the endothelium, the lining of arteries, to produce Nitric Oxide (NO), which is a gas.
One of the functions of NO is to send signals to the arteries to relax, which lowers resistance to blood flow and therefore reduces blood pressure.
There are many controlled trials showing that cocoa and dark chocolate can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, but the effects are usually mild.
However, there is also one study in people with elevated blood pressure that showed no effect, so take all this with a grain of salt.
Bottom Line: The bioactive compounds in cocoa can improve blood flow in the arteries and cause a small but statistically significant decrease in bloodpressure.
4. Dark Chocolate Raises HDL and Protects LDL Against Oxidation
Consuming dark chocolate can improve several important risk factors for heart disease.
In a controlled trial, cocoa powder was found to significantly decrease oxidized LDL cholesterol in men.
It also increased HDL and lowered total LDL in men with elevated cholesterol.
Oxidized LDL means that the LDL (“bad” cholesterol) has reacted with free radicals.
This makes the LDL particle itself reactive and capable of damaging other tissues… such as the lining of the arteries in your heart.
It makes perfect sense that cocoa lowers oxidized LDL. It contains an abundance of powerful antioxidants that do make it into the bloodstream and protect lipoproteins against
oxidative damage.
Dark chocolate can also reduce insulin resistance, which is another common risk factor for many diseases like heart disease and
diabetes.
Bottom Line: Dark chocolate improves several important risk factors for disease.
It lowers the susceptibility of LDL to
oxidative damage while increasing HDL and improving insulin sensitivity.
5. Dark Chocolate May Lower The Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
The compounds in dark chocolate appear to be highly protective against the oxidation of LDL.
In the long term, this should cause much less cholesterol to lodge in the arteries and we should see a lower risk of heart disease over the long term.
It turns out that we have several long-term observational studies that show a fairly drastic improvement.
In a study of 470 elderly men, cocoa was found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death by a whopping 50% over a 15 year period.
Another study revealed that eating chocolate 2 or more times per week lowered the risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries by 32%.
Eating chocolate less frequently had no effect.
Yet another study showed that chocolate 5+ times per week lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 57% .
Of course, these 3 studies are so-called observational studies that can not prove that it was the chocolate that caused the reduction in risk.
However, given that we have a biological mechanism (lower blood pressure and oxidized LDL) then I find it plausible that regular consumption of dark chocolate can in fact reduce the risk of heart disease.
Bottom Line: Observational studies show a drastic reduction in heart disease risk for the people who consume the most chocolate.
6. Dark Chocolate May Protect Your Skin Against The Sun
The bioactive compounds in dark chocolate may also be great for your skin.
The flavonols can protect against sun-induced damage, improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin density and hydration.
The minimal erythemal dose (MED) is the minimum amount of UVB rays required to cause redness in the skin, 24 hours after exposure.
In one study of 30 people, the MED more than doubled after consuming dark chocolate high in flavanols for 12 weeks.
If you’re planning on a beach vacation, consider loading up on dark chocolate in the prior weeks and months.
Bottom Line: Studies show that the
flavanols from cocoa can improve blood flow to the skin and protect it against sun-induced damage.
7. Dark Chocolate May Improve Brain Function
The good news isn’t over yet. Dark chocolate may also improve the function of the brain.
One study of healthy volunteers showed that 5 days of consuming high-flavanol cocoa improved blood flow to the brain.
Cocoa may also significantly improve cognitive function in elderly people with mental impairment. It also improves verbal fluency and several risk factors for disease.
Cocoa also contains stimulant substances like caffeine and theobromine, which may be a key
reason cocoa can improve brain function in the short term.

Amnesia
You've probably seen the startling memory loss of amnesia portrayed on television. A mysterious stranger shows up with no memories of his past, his identity or even his name. The diagnosis is clear: amnesia! Just
one more bonk on the head and it will come back to him soon...
In actuality, amnesia is unlikely to appear (let alone disapper) like on T.V., but may share some of its symptoms. Read on to learn about
the various types of amnesia and its real-life treatments.
Definition of Amnesia
Amnesia is a condition caused by the loss of memory, either wholly or partially. Memory is housed in several parts of the brain's limbic
system, and any condition that interferes with the operation of the limbic system can cause amnesia.
Symptoms of Amnesia
There are two distinct types of amnesia, each displaying specific symptoms.
Anterograde Amnesia - the loss of long-term memory, or the loss of the ability to form new long-term memories or memorize things.
People suffering from Anterograde Amnesia may find themselves unable to remember facts or people's names just a few minutes after hearing them because the memories do not
successfully transfer from their conscious short-term memory into permanent long-term memory.
Retrograde Amnesia - the loss of already existing memories. This type of Amnesia typically targets the most recent memories, and the amount of memory lost can vary based on the severity of the case. New memories may be formed (in contrast with
Anterograde Amnesia), but the patient may be unable to recall details of some of all of their lives prior to onset.
Causes of Amnesia
Amnesia can also be divided into various categories based on what causes it:
- Dissociative amnesia, caused by various psychological factors, including mental disorder, post-traumatic stress or defense
mechanisms.
- Post-traumatic amnesia, generally caused by a head injury. This type of amnesia is typically temporary, but may be permanent and either anterograde, retrograde, or a mixture.
Retrograde amnesia may be caused by caused by a head injury, stroke, tumor, hypoxia, encephalitis or chronic alcoholism .
Certain types of Amnesia may also be caused by drug or alcohol abuse. These "blackout periods" of Anterograde Amnesia are due to the intoxicating substance impairing the formation of memories.
Effects of Amnesia
People with Amnesia are usually lucid and aware of themselves and their surroundings, but may have trouble learning new information and forming new memories.
General intelligence, knowledge, attention span, awareness or judgement are not affected, nor are one's personality or sense of identity. Amnesia should be thought of distinctly from dementia, which often includes memory loss but also other cognitive problems that lead to a decline in the patients' ability to care for themselves.
Living with Amnesia can be difficult for the patient experiencing memory loss. Severe cases may require assistance from family or
professional caregivers.
Treatment for Amnesia
Anterograde amnesia cannot be treated with pharmacological methods. Treatment involves
educating patients to help themselves establish and define their daily routines.
Social and emotional support is also critical for these patients.
Retrograde amnesia is typically temporary and can be treated by exposing the patients to the familiar objects or memories they have lost. (Yea, this helped Kyle).
So, all said and done, avoid late night, alcohol etc.

Before posting this, I personally read wide on why Weed is good and why it is not.
I have heard series of guys saying this stuff(weed) is good for our brain, that it makes you remember everything you read. But, trust me after reading vastly I found out that it is false.
Although weed can make you creative and other minor stuffs but it's causes irrational behavior, it not only spoils our brain but also weaken our IQ. This stuff below might orientate you.

Solving/watching video puzzles and games could help children memories.

Video puzzle games which exercise a child's working memory were found to enhance abstract reasoning and problem solving skills significantly, researchers from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They added that the improvements persisted for at least three months after they stopped playing the games.
The authors found that giving the brain a daily workout really can improve wits and intelligence.
Video game makers have always promoted the cognitive skill training children can benefit from by playing some games. Studies never seem to agree on whether this claim is really true.
Psychologist Susanne M. Jaeggi, PhD. and team set out to determine what effects video games might have on the brain. Of 62 elementary and middle school children, 32 were trained for fifteen minutes five times a week for a month on a computerized task while the other 30 practiced general knowledge and vocabulary tasks. The video games tested working memory - this involves holding information while you solve a problem.
The researchers found that only the children who had been involved in the brain-training video games had clear improvements in abstract reasoning and problem solving - and these improvements persisted for three months after the training stopped.
In the working memory games, which were adaptations from a game aimed at older users, the kids had to follow and remember a sequence of positions on a grid, recognize a pattern and respond to questions about it. Each successfully completed sequence was followed by a longer one - the game progressively challenges the child's ability to hold data in his/her brain, as well as spatial information.
The game requires total concentration, in some cases for stretches of over a minute long. They have to be able to block out distractions while concentrating on a single task.
The authors stressed that the children who benefited the most were those who really needed them, as well as kids who do not find these types of games frustrating.
Jaeggi said parents should beware of pushing their children too far, as is often the case with sports and musical performance. It is important to get the right balance between too much and too little.
Children with good working memory find it easier to remember teacher instructions, are better able to focus on classroom tasks, and are not easily distracted, the authors explained.
The authors concluded:
"We propose that future research should not investigate whether cognitive training works, but rather should determine what training regimens and what training conditions result in the best transfer effects, investigate the underlying neural and cognitive mechanisms, and finally, investigate for whom cognitive training is most useful."
Working memory
Working memory , also referred to as short-term (recent) memory is a system of storing and managing the information needed to perform complex cognitive tasks, such as comprehension, reasoning, and learning. It involves the selection, initiation and termination of data retrieval, storage, encoding, and other information-processing functions.
An example of a working memory test is memory span. For example, the examiner reads a list of random numbers out loud; about one number per second. The listener has to recall them in order. Most people's memory spans are limited to approximately 7 numbers.
George Armitage Miller, psychologist and author of. " The magical number seven, plus or minus two," found that typical memory span capacities for young adults were seven digits, six letters, or about five words.
Some studies have shown that a child's working memory at 5 years of age is a better predictor of academic success than IQ.
