Diseases Fat and Obese People can have

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in weight at  12:29 pm

More than 65 million adults and 10 million children suffer from obesity, considered one of the leading causes of life-threatening diseases. Being morbidly obese can compromise your health, shorten your life, and even cause death. If you are overweight, the probabilities of developing heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure increase
significantly.
Click on this link and purchase the product. Use it consecutively according to a professional description and see the magic in your weight.
- High Blood Pressure
— High blood pressure is the primary cause of death among Americans older than 25. About 75 million people suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Blood pressure tends to increase with weight gain and age. It is not known why obesity is a major cause of high blood pressure. However, research has shown that obese patients displayed an increase in blood volume and arterial resistance. For people who are overweight and have high blood pressure, losing as little as 8 pounds can help reduce blood pressure to a safe level.
- Diabetes
Obesity is considered one of the most significant factors in the development of insulin resistance, and insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes . According to the World Health Organization, more than 90 percent of diabetes patients worldwide have type 2 diabetes. Being overweight or obese contributes to the development of diabetes by making cells more resistant to the effects of insulin. A weight loss of 15-20 pounds can help you decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Heart Disease
— According to the American Heart Association, obesity is a major risk factor for developing coronary heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
People who are overweight are at a greater risk of suffering a heart attack before the age of 45. Obese adolescents have a greater chance of having a heart attack before the age of 35 than non-obese adolescents. If you are overweight, losing 10-15 pounds can reduce your risk of developing heart disease. If you exercise regularly, the risk of developing heart disease falls even more.
- High Cholesterol levels
— High cholesterol is one of the leading causes of heart attacks.
Cholesterol is transported through your blood in two ways: the low –density lipoprotein (LDL), which transports cholesterol to the cells that need it, and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL), which is the healthy cholesterol that reduces your risk for heart attack. Having high LDL levels raises your risk of having heart disease by 20 percent. Losing 11-20 pounds can help you significantly reduce your cholesterol level.
- Cancer
— A study by the American Heart Association found that being overweight increases your chances for developing cancer by 50 percent. Women have a higher risk of developing cancer if they are more than 20 pounds overweight. Regular exercise and a weight loss of as little as 12 pounds can significantly decrease the risk.
- Infertility
— Being obese can cause changes in the hormonal levels of women, which can result in ovarian failure. Women who are 15-25 pounds overweight are at a higher risk of suffering from infertility and ovarian cancer.
Our bodies need to be at an appropriate weight to produce the right amount of hormones and regulate ovulation and menstruation. Don’t think men are immune to infertility. Overweight men have a greater chance of developing motility and a lower sperm count. Shedding 12-14 pounds can help you lower the risks.
- Back Pain
— Obesity is one the contributing factors of back and joint pain. Excessive weight can cause injury to the most vulnerable parts of the spine, which carries the body’s weight. When it has to carry excess weight, the odds of suffering from a spinal injury or structural damage increase. Being overweight also raises the risk of developing osteoporosis, lower back pain, arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
Losing 10-15 pounds can help you decrease the risk of developing these problems.
- Skin Infections
— Obese and overweight individuals may have skin that folds over on itself. These creased areas can become irritated from the rubbing and sweating, which can lead to skin infections.
- Ulcers
— According to a study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) , obesity can be a contributing factor to the development of gastric ulcers. Gastric ulcers occur when there is an imbalance between the amount of hydrochloric acid that is secreted and the enzyme pepsin. Overweight men are at a greater risk of developing gastric ulcers than women. A weight loss of as little as 7 pounds can help reduce the risk.
- Gallstones
— Being severely overweight increases the risk of developing gallstones, especially in women. Gallstones are caused when the liver releases excessive amounts of bile, which is stored in the gallbladder.
Gallstones are more common in older women and those with a family history of gallstones.
Losing 4-9 pounds reduces the risk of
developing gallstones. Moderate exercise also can help lower your risk.

Detailed: Types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in transmitted at  7:01 pm

Different types of STDs have different
consequences and different treatments. Here's a rundown of the major sexually transmitted diseases.
- Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis)
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that spreads easily during sex. According to the CDC, about 2.8 million Americans are infected with chlamydia every year, and many don't even know it. Although some infected people may notice some unusual discharge from their genitals or pain while urinating, many don't have any symptoms at all.
Chlamydia may be a quiet disease, but the consequences can be severe. If untreated, the infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, a major cause of infertility. In men, the germ can cause epididymitis, painful swelling around a testicle that can reduce fertility. Pregnant women infected with chlamydia can pass the germ to their babies while giving birth. Babies who catch chlamydia can develop pink eye and pneumonia within the first few weeks of life.
The good news is that chlamydia is no match for modern medicine. Antibiotics can quickly clear up the infection and prevent possible complications. If you suspect that you have chlamydia, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
A simple test can detect the germ for
chlamydia. Even if you don't have symptoms of chlamydia, in some cases regular testing may be a good idea. The CDC recommends annual testing for all sexually active women 25-years-old and under.
You should also be screened for chlamydia -- even if you're over 25 -- if you've had a history of STDs, have changed sex partners, had multiple partners, or had unsafe sex in the past year, according to the American College of Preventive Medicine. CDC guidelines released in 2006 also recommend that all women with chlamydia be rescreened approximately three months after their treatment is finished, because of the risk of re-infection. Note that both the person who has been diagnosed AND his or her current sex partner(s) should be treated -- since current partners are likely to carry the infection and could be reinfected if they are not treated at the same time.
- Genital herpes
Like chlamydia, genital herpes is an extremely common infection that frequently goes unnoticed. According to the CDC, at least 45 million Americans have this viral disease, but most don't know it. The symptoms are often mild or nonexistent, but some people will notice a tingling or burning sensation in the genitals followed by the appearance of painful blisters or open sores. These sores go away after a few weeks. The virus, however, will remain in the body for life.
If your symptoms are severe or if the sores keep coming back, your doctor can prescribe antiviral medications to reduce the occurrence of outbreaks. People are more infectious during outbreaks, though there is still some risk of infecting your partner even when there are no symptoms.
According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a daily dose of an antiviral drug can significantly reduce the risk of passing herpes on to a sex partner. The risk doesn't disappear, however, so anyone infected with herpes should still use condoms during sex, even if there are no visible sores.
- Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
HIV is the most feared of all sexually
transmitted infections, and for good reason.
This virus is the cause of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), a disease that killed 2 million people worldwide in 2007 alone. In the United States, more than 500,000 have died from the disease. The disease is most often spread through sexual contact -- both heterosexual and homosexual -- and through sharing needles.
People with AIDS have extremely weak immune systems, leaving them vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain types of cancer. If you're infected with HIV, your doctor can prescribe powerful medications to fight the virus and, hopefully, keep you from developing AIDS. Nonetheless, the path to successful AIDS treatment is not easy for most people -- the medicines must be taken every day for life in order to prevent treatment failure, and most of them have the potential to cause significant side effects.
Of course, the best way to avoid AIDS is to avoid catching HIV in the first place. The same safe-sex practices that cut the risk of other STDS -- using condoms, not sharing needles, and limiting your number of partners -- will offer powerful protection against HIV.
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
There are 100 types of HPV, most of them harmless, and about 30 types are sexually transmitted. Some types of HPV can lead to genital warts and others can lead to cancer.
At least 50 percent of all adults will contrac this sexually transmitted virus at some point in their lives. According to the CDC, 20 million Americans have HPV today and about 6.2 million new infections occur every year.
The immune system usually fends off the germ before it has a chance to do any damage.
Sometimes, however, the virus can linger for years in women and eventually cause cancer of the cervix if undetected or untreated. Pap smears are the best way to prevent this most feared complication of HPV. In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new HPV test for women over 30, but it is only used to screen for cervical cancer. Since only a tiny percentage of women who have the virus will ever develop cervical cancer, the test has the potential to cause a lot of unnecessary worry.
If you're a sexually active woman over 30, ask your doctor if you should have an HPV test along with your regular Pap smear.
The most recognizable symptom of an HPV infection is genital warts. If you have them, make a doctor's appointment immediately and avoid sex until you and your partner are treated.
Since the virus is spread through skin-to-skin contact, the only way to prevent it is to avoid exposure. However, a new vaccine protects women from the most common HPV strains that cause genital warts and cervical cancer.
The CDC recommends the vaccine for girls ages 11 and 12, and for girls and women between the ages of 13 through 26 who have not yet been vaccinated, or who haven't completed the vaccine series. Although evidence doesn't show that latex condoms prevent the spread of HPV, it does suggest that condoms may help reduce the risk of contracting genital warts or cervical cancer, according to the CDC.
- Gonorrhea
This bacterial disease has been going around for centuries, and despite advances in medical treatments, it shows no signs of going away.
The CDC receives roughly 350,000 reports of new gonorrhea cases each year, and another 350,000 infections probably go unreported.
The main symptoms of the disease are discharge from the genitals and difficult or painful urination. If untreated, gonorrhea can lead to infection of the reproductive tract and even spread to the joints and blood; in women, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility, as well as serious infections and blindness in newborns. Prompt treatment with antibiotics can clear up the infection and prevent complications.
Symptoms of gonorrhea include pain or burning when urinating, yellow or bloody vaginal discharge, rectal itching or discharge, painful or bloody bowel movements, and pus or pain in the penis. Using latex condoms each time you have vaginal or rectal sex will help prevent the disease.
- Syphilis
The rates of syphilis declined by 89.2 percent from 1990 to 2000, although the number of cases rose from 5,979 in 2000 to 11,466 in 2007. Since syphilis increases the risk of acquiring and spreading HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, this increase worries many researchers.
If untreated, syphilis can cause heart and nervous system disorders, including blindness, and death. The first symptom of the disease is often a painless ulcer called a chancre, often found on the genitals. Several weeks later, a rash may appear over the whole body, generally on the palms and the soles of the feet. The rash will look like "brown sores about the size of a penny," according to the NIH.
Other symptoms include fatigue, a mild fever, hair loss, and swollen lymph glands.
In May 2006, the CDC released an updated National Plan to Eliminate Syphilis. If you think you have been exposed to the disease, or have symptoms, get tested immediately.
- Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that assaults the liver. The virus can cause lifelong infection as well as liver scarring, liver cancer or liver failure, and even death. Symptoms of hepatitis B infection include fatigue, jaundice, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, and joint pain. However, 30 percent of those affected show no symptoms at all.
A hepatitis B vaccine is your best protection against this serious disease. Additional precautions include using latex condoms and never sharing needles, drugs, or personal items, such as razors or toothbrushes.

Systems in our body that could be at risk if we don't sleep.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in system at  1:27 pm

Chronic sleep deprivation can interfere with balance, coordination, and decision-making abilities.
You’re at risk falling asleep during the day, even if you fight it. Stimulants like caffeine are not able to override your body’s profound need for sleep.
When you’re sleep deprived, the effects of alcohol consumption are magnified, as is your risk of being involved in an accident.
According to Harvard Medical School , studies show that sleeping less than five hours a night increases the risk of death from all causes by about 15 percent. Sleep deprivation is dangerous to your mental and physical health and can dramatically lower your quality of life.
- Central Nervous System
Your central nervous system is the information highway of your body. Sleep is necessary to keep it functioning properly.
During sleep, the brain rests busy neurons and forms new pathways so you’re ready to face the world in the morning. In children and young adults, the brain releases growth hormones during sleep.
While you’re sleeping, your body is also producing proteins that help cells repair damage.
Sleep deprivation leaves the brain exhausted, so it can’t perform its duties well. The most obvious effect is sleepiness. You may find yourself yawning a lot and feeling sluggish.
Lack of sleep interferes with your ability to concentrate and learn new things. It can negatively impact both short-term and long-term memory. It gets in the way of your decision-making process and stifles creativity.
Your emotions are also affected, making you more likely to have a short temper and mood swings. Overall cognitive function is impaired.
If sleep deprivation continues long enough, you’re at increased risk of hallucinations, especially if you have narcolepsy or systemic lupus erythematosis. Lack of sleep can trigger mania in people who have manic depression.
Other risks include impulsive behavior, depression, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts.
A side effect of sleep deprivation is micro sleep. That’s when you’re asleep for only a few seconds or a few minutes, but you don’t realize it. If you’re sleep deprived, micro sleep is out of your control and can be extremely dangerous if you’re driving. It can also make you more prone to injury due to trips and falls.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute , insufficient sleep has played a part in tragic accidents involving airplanes, ships, and even nuclear reactor meltdowns.
- Immune System
When you’re sleeping, your
immune system produces protective cytokines and infection-fighting antibodies and cells. It uses these tools to fight off foreign substances like bacteria and viruses. These cytokines and other protective substances also help you sleep, giving the immune system more energy to defend against illness.
Sleep deprivation means your immune system doesn’t have a chance to build up its forces.
According to the Mayo Clinic, studies show that if you don’t get enough sleep, it’s more likely that your body won’t be able to fend off invaders. It may also take you longer to recover from illness. Long-term sleep deprivation raises your risk of developing chronic illnesses like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
- Respiratory System
Since sleep deprivation can weaken your immune system, you’re more vulnerable to respiratory problems like the common cold and influenza. If you already have a chronic lung disease, sleep deprivation is likely to make it worse.
- Digestive System
According to Harvard Medical
School , a few studies have found a link between lack of sleep and weight gain. Along with eating too much and not exercising, sleep deprivation is one of the risk factors for obesity.
Sleep deprivation increases production of the stress hormone cortisol. Lack of sleep lowers your levels of a hormone called leptin, which tells your brain that you’ve had enough to eat.
In addition, it raises levels of a biochemical called ghrelin, which is an appetite stimulant.
Sleep deprivation prompts your body to release higher levels of insulin after you eat, promoting fat storage and increasing your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Cardiovascular System
Since you’re more likely to
gain weight if you’re chronically sleep deprived, you’re also at increased risk of problems with your cardiovascular system.
Sleep plays a vital role in your body’s ability to heal and repair your blood vessels and heart. Sleep deprivation can lead to higher risk of chronic health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. According to Harvard Medical School , for people with hypertension, one night without enough sleep can cause elevated blood pressure all through the next day.

Diseases Sleep Deprivation can cause.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in sleeping at  11:30 am

You need sleep as much as you need to breathe and eat.
While you’re sleeping, your body is busy tending to your physical and mental health and getting you ready for another day.
In children and adolescents, hormones that promote growth are released during sleep.
These hormones help build muscle mass, as well as make repairs to cells and tissues.
Sleep is vital to development during puberty.
When you’re deprived of sleep, your brain can’t function properly, affecting your cognitive abilities and emotional state. If it continues long enough, it can lower your body’s defenses, putting you at risk of developing chronic illness. The more obvious signs of sleep deprivation are excessive sleepiness, yawning, and irritability.

Top Diseases humans can get from dogs.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in dogs at  2:23 pm

Everyone likes dogs except me. Lol. I just dislike them, well, it's the most common pet so many people hug, kiss, some even smooch them. I have written an article on this before, but not as detailed as this. So get orientated and be mindful of your dogs and visit your veterinary doctor.
The diseases:
- Ringworm
If you notice hairless round patches on your dog, he may have a ringworm condition.
Ringworm is caused by a fungus that can be easily transmitted from dogs to humans. To keep from contracting this condition from your infected dog, be sure to always wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap after petting him. If your dog develops this condition, don't worry. It can be easily treated with proper medication. If you happen to contract this condition from your dog, you can get rid of it with a special anti-fungal cream.
- Roundworms
In case you're not familiar with roundworms, they're spaghetti-looking parasites that are often found in a dog's digestive system.
Roundworms are very serious because they can cause blindness. You may be asking,
How can they cause someone to go blind?
Well, here's an example: If a dog that's infected with roundworms defecates outside, several eggs can be deposited into the soil.
Children love playing in dirt, but they also love sticking their dirty hands into their mouth. If they do this, they could accidentally ingest some of the roundworm eggs. The eggs will then develop into larvae and establish themselves in their eye(s), causing blindness.
This is just one of the many reasons that dogs needs to be given de-wormers on a regular basis.
- Rabies
We've all heard of rabies. Infact it's one of the worst diseases ranked in the world. This condition is so serious that it's now required in most states that dogs receive the rabies vaccination. In order for a dog owner to contract rabies from their pet, the dog must first be bit by a rabid animal and then their dog must bite them.
Another way a human can contract this condition from their infected dog is if their dog's saliva gets into contact with an open wound they may have. Rabies is a potentially fatal condition and should always be treated seriously. If your dog has been bitten by another dog or any type of wildlife, you need to report it to the proper authorities so your dog can be quarantined to help prevent a rabies outbreak in case it did happen to contract the condition after getting bit.
- Lyme Disease
Even though dogs can't transmit Lyme disease to humans, we can still contract this condition through our dogs. How is this possible? One word: TICKS! Ticks are carriers of Lyme disease and since they can often be found on dogs, owners can develop the disease if they're bitten by an infected tick. Within 2 weeks of developing Lyme disease, you may notice a rash that resembles a bulls-eye target. You may also run a fever. Some infected people may not ever show any early symptoms. The best thing to do to avoid this from happening in the first place is to avoid areas that are infested with ticks. If you live in an area where it's impossible to avoid ticks, consult with your dog's veterinarian regarding the issue so he can prescribe a special tick preventative for your dog. Just remember to stay on schedule with the preventative and to not forget to give it to your dog.
- Scabies
Scabies are the result of your dog itching and developing scabs all over his body. What causes this is when a mite burrows itself in the skin and causes constant itching, scabs and hair loss. Luckily, if humans contract this condition from their dogs, the itchiness will only last a few weeks and then go away on its own, without the need for medication. The itchiness doesn't last a long time because dogs are the mites' main host, not humans.
There are actually many more than I've listed above.

Essential: Diseases Excess Garri intake can cause.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in garri at  10:07 pm

As we are apparently aware that the cassava produced grain can cause lots of stuffs we don't like.
Since its one of Africa's most versatile products in consumption, it leaves us vulnerable to many unwanted diseases.
This cassava-produced-grain can be used to make eba(garri made with hot water). So also can it be cooked with cold water. Africa Students has so made this garri a valuable stock to the extent that it brought out a phrase which I won't want to say. It can be eaten with fried meat, raw cooked meat, fried fish, raw cooked fish, groundnut and many others.
So good as it is in quashing hunger, so also does it leaves us vulnerable to many diseases such as
- Ulcer
- Blindness
- Stomach pain
- Blurry Vision
- Anaemia
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes(since its mostly mixed with sugar)
- Scratching of the skin.
- Skin rash
Note: it is not advisable to take garri in a cold weather.

Signs and Symptoms of Bladder Cancer.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in diseases at  1:45 pm

Among the types of Cancers, we are orientating you on bladder cancer.
Read below...
People with bladder cancer may experience the following symptoms or signs. Sometimes, people with bladder cancer do not show any of these symptoms. Or, these symptoms may be caused by a medical condition that is not cancer. Bladder cancer usually does not cause symptoms that specifically indicate cancer. Most often, bladder cancer is diagnosed when a person tells his or her doctor about blood in the urine, also called hematuria. Gross hematuria means that enough blood is present in the urine to be visible to the patient. It is also possible there are small amounts of blood in the urine that are unable to be seen; this is called microscopic hematuria, and it can only be detected with a urine test.
General urine tests are not used to make a specific diagnosis of bladder cancer because hematuria can be a sign of several other conditions that are not cancer, such as an infection or kidney stones. One type of urine test that can indicate the presence of cancer is cytology, a test in which the urine is studied under a microscope to look for cancer cells. See the Diagnosis section for more information. If you are concerned about a symptom or sign on this list, please talk with your doctor.
- Blood or blood clots in the urine.
- Pain or burning during urination.
- Frequent urination.
- Feeling the need to urinate many times throughout the night.
- Feeling the need to urinate, but not being able to pass urine.
- Lower back pain on one side of the body Symptoms of advanced bladder cancer may include
- Pain
- Unexplained appetite loss
- Weight loss.
Sometimes when the first symptoms of bladder cancer appear, the cancer has already spread to another part of the body. In this situation, the symptoms depend on where the cancer has spread. For example, cancer that has spread to the lungs may cause a cough or shortness of breath, spread to the liver may cause abdominal pain or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes), and spread to the bone may cause bone pain or a fracture (bone break).

Reasons Why having a Pot belly isn't good for your health.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in reasons at  2:26 am

A pot belly doesn't just look awful, distasteful and ugly. It is also not good for your health. See some of our tangible reasons for saying that.
- Erectile Dysfunction: That’s right guys…
Your belly fat could be preventing proper blood flow to where you want it most. And it’s not just circulation… Your testosterone levels can plummet because of stomach fat. But
shrinking your midsection will help. An Australian study found men who lost 5% to 10% of their body weight over two months helped fix this problem. 1 So, let’s say you weigh 200 pounds. That means you’d have to lose about five pounds per month. You can do that without breaking a sweat .
- Heart Disease: Do You know extra fat puts your heart in danger?. It’s a major cause of heart disease. But fat in your midsection is the most damaging. A study found people carrying higher amounts of stomach fat—compared to other areas—were more at risk for heart disease.
It can double your risk.
Abdominal fat keeps blood from getting to important organs…including the heart.
- Dementia: Health Watch readers know that eating trans fats decreases cognitive function .
That’s bad on its own. But a fat buildup is even more dangerous. One study found being overweight alone is a risk. Swedish women in their 70s were more likely to develop dementia
in their 80s than women who were two BMI points smaller. That’s about a 12-pound difference.
And it was belly fat in particular that increased their risk.
Another study revealed people with more belly fat are three times as likely to develop the disease. Even at a normal weight. A bulging belly can increase your dementia risk by as
much as 89%.
- Diabetes: Research shows a direct link between abdominal fat and insulin resistance. 6 It may be all about location.
Blood from your gut travels to your liver. It should be used for energy. But fat restricts this. And that’s just the first part of the problem.
More fat makes your liver’s job harder. It means less insulin is turned into energy. This makes blood sugar levels rise…along with your diabetes risk.
- Cancer: Colon, pancreatic, breast, and uterine cancerrisks all rise with an oversized gut.
Cancer can start developing in as little as seven years from the fat deposits in your midsection. 8
Fat buildup in your core makes organs have to work harder. They can start to malfunction. It also disrupts your hormone balance. This puts you at greater risk for cancers that depend on them.
These include breast, colorectal, and ovarian cancers.

Ish!. Diseases one can get from drinking dirty water or staying near stagnant/dirty water.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in water at  12:56 am

While researching on this stuff now, I saw some pictures of the elucidated diseases you can get from drinking dirty water or staying near gutters and places where dirty water are. O My Gosh!. Was pretty irritated. Lol. You thought I was brave since I post health stuffs?. Hi friend, am not so brave o. I dare not download the pictures of the number 10 and 2 diseases. You search on Google and Click on images, You would certainly be irritated. If you not, comment here, you might be considered as an admin here. Lol.
Read and get orientated...
10. Amoebiasis
This disease is also known as ‘Travellers Diarrhoea’. It infects the large intestine and sometimes liver also. It can range from mild diarrhea to dysentery with blood and mucus.
It is frequently affected to people who have poor hygiene. It is caused by sewage, non-treated drinking water, flies in water supply and secondary by direct person-to-person contact or indirectly by eating or drinking
faecally contaminated food or water. To prevent the spread of amoebaisis around the home, wash hands properly with soap, use clean bathrooms and toilets and avoid sharing things like towels or face washers.
9. Cholera
Cholera is an infection in the small intestine caused by the bacteria ‘vibrio chlorae’. Its symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting. It is caused by drinking water or eating food that
has been contaminated by feces, i.e waste products of an infected person. When their untreated diarrheal discharge gets into the water system such as groundwater or drinking water, it affects the other people. Poorly cleaned vegetables irrigated by contaminated water sources is another symptom of cholera.
In places like refugee camps and villages with limited water resources and poor sanitation conditions, a single affected victim can contaminate water for the entire population.
So if water served is cleaned properly , the mortality rate can rise from 1% to 50%-60%.
8. Dysentery
Dysentry is the disorder of intestine, that results in severe diarrhea , containing blood and mucus in the feces with fever and abdominal pain. Generally , it is the mild illness causing symptoms consisting of mild stomach pains and frequent passage of stools.
The urge to defecate , the volume of feces passed and the presence of mucus , pus and blood depend on the pathogen that is causing the disease. These pathogens enter the large
intestine through oral contact, or from infected and dirty food or water. The person may have elevated body temperature, fever, nausea and vomiting. It is caused mainly by the poor hygiene and it spreads with tainted food and water contaminated with the bacteria. It can be prevented by taking measures to reduce the risk of infection by regularly washing hands, drinking clean water and maintaining good hygiene.
7. Diarrhoea
Diarrhea is a condition which involves frequent passing of loose and watery stools. It is the second cause of death among small children. It is caused by a virus that infects the gut. Water borne diarrhea usually results from the ingestion of viruses and parasites in water contaminated by human or agricultural fecal waste. It causes the loss of fluids from the body which leads to dehydration and electrolyte disturbances such as potassium
deficiency or salt imbalance. Travelling
diarrhea is caused by drinking water or eating food contaminated with fecal material. So it can be prevented by using boiled or chemically
disinfected water and not eating or drinking from unknown sources.
6. Hepatitis A
It is an infectious disease of the liver caused by hepatitis A virus(HAV) usually spread by fecal-oral route, person-to-person by ingestion of contaminated food or water or
through direct contact with infectious person.
HAV infection produces a self-limited disease which does not result in chronic infection or liver disease. In poor hygiene places, the risk of infection of virus is high. The virus can manifest itself in water and food. It causes fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, jaundice and depression. So hepatitis A can be prevented by using safe water, proper disposal of sewage and good hygiene and also by taking hepatitis A vaccinations.
5. Lead poisoning
Exposure to lead causes many health
problems especially to children. The pipes in buildings are made of lead. Lead is a metal and gives no benefit to human beings. Too much lead can damage many systems of our
body including the nervous and reproductive system and the kidney. It can cause high blood pressure and anemia. Lead can damage brain, cause convulsions, coma and eventually death. People get exposed to lead through air they breath, water ,and through food/ingestion. The main source of lead is from drinking water through lead piping and lead-
combinig solders. So to prevent urself from lead poisoning water should be treated regularly and if lead pipes cannot be removed, then cold water should be flushed through in the morning before drinking.
4. Malaria
Malaria is caused by a parasite which lay their larvae in still water. It begins with the bite of an infected female “ANOPHELES” mosquito which introduces the protists through saliva in the respiratory system. It
causes symptoms which include fever and headache and in severe cases can lead to coma and death. It also leads to respiratory distress which occurs maximum in children
and leads to pneumonia and severe anaemia.
Due to bad treatment systems, garbage and sanitation facilities are not taken care of, and access to clean, treated drinking water is not
available. So all these conditions leads to the possibility of excess water pooling, which creates the environment for diseases causing
mosquitos to breed. So the ‘Anopholes’ mosquito enter the blood, causes fever, anemia, and many other complications and
eventually death. By using pesticides and mosquito nets, preventing mosquito bites, cleaning the garbage and not letting still water outside the houses or in water coolers can help prevent malaria.
3. SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome)
SARS is a viral respiratory disease in humans caused by SARS coronavirus. It causes flu including fever, cough, sore-throat and
gastrointestinal symptoms. The virus manifests itself in improperly treated water. It can be prevented by washing hands frequently, using alcohol based cleaning rubs for hands if soap and water are not available, clean work place environment regularly, use clean water and do not share your personal articles.
2. Polyomavirus infection
Polyomavirus are the tumor viruses in humans and animals. They often persist as infections in a host without causing disease, but produce tumors in a host of different species or a host with ineffective immune system.
Many polymavirus have been found to infect birds and mammals. It is a tumors virus in humans and animals which leads to fundamental insights into carcinogenesis, DNA replication and protein processing. It is caused
by two viruses – JC and BK virus. These viruses are widespread and manifests itself in water and 80% of the population has antibodies of Polyomavirus. These two viruses
produces a mild respiratory infection and infects kidneys and brain.
1. Polio (poliomyelitis)
Polio ia an acute viral infectious disease caused by the agent poliovirus. It is an infantile paralysis. It spreads from person-to-person from fecal-oral-route. It enters water
through the feces of an infected person. 90% of polio infections cause no symptoms at all but affected individuals show a range of symptoms if the virus enters the blood stream.
If it enters the central nervous system, it infects and destroys motor neurons which leads to muscle weakness and accute flacid paralysis. It show symptoms like headache, fever and occasional seizures and spastic paralysis. Factors like immune deficiency, malnutrition increases the risk of polio infection. Polio can be prevented by immunization with polio drops at birth, using clean water and by maintaining proper hygiene.

Diseases you may get from your dog(pet).

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in hugging at  12:26 am

Many people likes pet like crazy, especially dogs, some even go as far as hugging or kissing them. I hate dogs sha. Lol. A bit scared of them(whispers!). So now here are diseases you can get from hugging and Smooching your dogs.
Read and get orientated
1) Toxocariasis: This disease is caused by a common parasite in animals, the roundworm.
Anyone is susceptible to contracting this disease, but we find that children and people who accidentally eat dirt are at higher risk.
Animals that have roundworms will shed the toxocara eggs in their feces, and when infected dirt is ingested with these eggs, people can contract the disease. In animals, toxocariasis
can cause organ damage, respiratory disease and eye problems including visual deficiencies amongst other symptoms.
Toxocariasis can be prevented with good hygiene and a regular deworming program, set up by your veterinarian, for your pet. In humans, toxocariasis will generally resolve
itself because the larvae can’t mature in a human host.
2) Ringworm: Ringworm is a skin disease that can be transmitted to people from multiple different types of animals. It is caused by a fungus and typically results in skin lesions
that are red, itchy and crusty. Ringworm transmitted by direct contact from an animal that is infected. If your animal has a skin
lesion, it is important to see your vet quickly to properly diagnose the cause of the lesion and avoid potential exposure to ringworm. In
humans, ringworm is typically treated with topical or oral anti-fungal medications.
3) Rabies: Rabies is a viral disease that can be carried by several different species. Though more common in wild animals, dogs and cats are potential carriers of the disease. It is typically transmitted to people through the bite of an infected animal. After a bite wound, it may take people up to years to exhibit
symptoms, but generally symptoms develop within a few months. Initially signs may include fever and achiness, but quickly change to include neurologic disease including
confusion, agitation, and mentation changes.
When neurologic symptoms occur, they generally become fatal.
It is extremely important to keep your pets current on their rabies vaccines to help control this disease. It is also important to avoid contact with unfamiliar animals, especially
wildlife. Suspected rabies exposure in humans is typically treated with special wound care and a series of injections.
4) Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: This disease is caused by a bacterium known as Rickettsia rickettsia . This disease is not
transmitted directly from your pet to you, but rather by ticks that your dog may carry. If your pet goes out into a tick-infested area, they may carry them back into your home where you could be bitten and contract the disease. Symptoms generally start with a fever, and can include rashes (commonly near arms and ankles), intestinal discomfort, diarrhea, and joint pain. This disease can be serious enough to hospitalize some people, and treatment usually involves antibiotic use immediately upon suspicion of exposure.
5) Giardia: Giardia is a small intestinal parasite that is relatively common in dogs, cats, and humans, among many other species.
Symptoms are the same in pets as they are in people and can include nausea, diarrhea, gas, and other intestinal based signs. Some animals and people may have this disease with no symptoms at all. Though the risk factor of contracting giardia from your pet is thought to be small, it is possible and proper
precautions should be taken.
Because giardia is transmitted by consuming contaminated feces (can be indirectly, for example through contaminated water), it is important to use good hygiene when disposing
of your animals’ waste. Usually, good hygiene is enough to prevent transmission of giardia. If your pet has diarrhea, it is important to see
your veterinarian as soon as possible. In humans, giardia is often treated with an antibacterial/antiprotozoal oral medication.
There are many other possible zoonotic diseases that we can’t address in the scope ofthis article.

Things we touch almost everyday that are dirtier than toilet seats.

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in toothbrush at  8:36 am

This is a research work, read and get orientated
We often use hand sanitizers after visiting a public toilet as we fear infection. That fear is justified, but do you know about various other things that can actually be more dangerous?
Toothbrushes: Surprised? Well, don't be.
After a toilet flush, bacteria can travel up to 6 feet and linger in the air for up to 2 hours and hence, land up on toothbrushes.
Kitchen wipes and sponges: They have 10 million bacteria per square inch and are known to be 2,00,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat. They can affect health severely.
Chopping boards: Boards used to chop raw meat have truckload of faecal bacteria, need not be told how harmful they can be. Average chopping boards have 200 times more faecal bacteria than a toilet seat.
Carpets: Carpets are known to have
2,00,000 bacteria per square inch and are 400 times dirtier than a toilet seat.
Ice: A study conducted in various
American restaurants revealed that the ice it served had more bacteria than the restaurant's toilet water.
Restroom floors: With the number of
people walking in with their dirty shoes, the number of bacteria on the floor is bound to be more than that on a toilet seat. Public restrooms are known have up to 1.5 to 2 million bacteria per square inch, whereas an average toilet seat houses only 50.
Restaurant menus: Menu cards are often the least cleaned items and hence have a huge number of bacteria on them. When compared to a toilet seat they have 10 times more bacteria, that may or may not be harmful.
Office desks: Shocked? Is that where you spend most of your day? A study
conducted revealed that office desks have 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat and influenza viruses are most common on office desks.
Cell phones: Mobile phones are known to have 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Cleaning it regularly is important because the chances of infection is high as the mouth is exposed to these bacteria.
Keyboards: Clean your keyboard now! It is quite likely that you have never cleaned it.
They are known to carry over 200 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

Cleanliness is Holiness!

Diseases you can get from a public toilet

by Olabajo Oluwatobiloba  |  in toilet at  8:18 am

One day or the other, you get pressed while walking, then, you walk in to a public toilet, didn't clean or wash the seat, you started pooping, you finished pooping, then you wash your buttocks, use your hand to draw the flush button, Then walk out!!. My beloved, you have just registered for a toilet disease, if your registration is accepted(lol), you be ready to get any of this below.
Read and get orientated

Here is a list of diseases you might get from a public toilet:
Gut infection – Faecal-borne bacteria like E.coli, streptococcus, staphylococcus and shigella are the most abundant bugs found in a public toilet. Contamination of surfaces by an infected person’s faeces can transmit their infections.
Some strains of E. coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria can cause bloody diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
Shigella bacterium causes severe diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and dysentery, etc.
Lung and skin infections
Streptococcus can cause contagious throat and skin infections.
Staphylococcus bacteria that cause skin infections, pneumonia, food poisoning , etc. linger around on toilet surfaces for longer periods, thereby increasing the chances of
disease transmission.
Viral infections – You could catch a cold from the public toilet. While the common cold virus usually survives for a shorter while, some viruses like influenza, norovirus, etc. can live for many days on toilet surfaces.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) – It is also possible, but unlikely, to get an STD by sitting on a toilet seat! Though very unlikely,
infectious material on the seat may come in contact with a break in your skin and infect you.
However, despite the bad news there is no need to panic. By adopting simple hygienic measures like hand washing and by increasing your body immunity you can still keep these
infections at bay. Moreover, the toilet surfaces are not a common vehicle for transmitting
infections. You’re more likely to be exposed to these bugs by touching things every day that are dirtier than a toilet seat!
Mobile phones, kitchen wipes and sponges, chopping boards and carpets have more bugs than toilet seats. Even the keyboards and
office desks have respectively 200 times and 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.
Influenza viruses are most common on office desks.
Tips to Prevent Contracting those Nasty Toilet Bugs:
- Use a hand sanitizer or tissue paper while opening the toilet door.
- Use a toilet seat cover (available at
pharmacies), and if u don’t have one clean the toilet seat with toilet paper (you can do away with this step while using an Indian style toilet).
- When you have no other choice hover closely above the toilet seat.
- Use toilet paper to press flush button.
- Flush with the lid down on the toilet seat or exit the place quickly after flushing.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after you use the toilet.
- Wipe your hands dry with tissue paper.
